The annual Macy’s Day parade falls on our national holiday of Thanksgiving and is a celebration of the Amercian traditions of commerce and consumerism. While many, many balloons have made their way down the hallowed route the following stand out as “notable floatables”.

Art and design meet philanthropy to form one of the most creative charities in the world, Canstruction. A foundation of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), Canstruction is a design/build competition where teams of architects, engineers, and students compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food.
I’m a secret loving type of gal, which is why I am so intrigued by DesCours. A free, public, 10-day architecture and art event held the second week of December in New Orleans, the event (coordinated by AIA New Orleans) challenges internationally renowned architects and artists create architecture installations within “hidden” locations in the heart of New Orleans, including private courtyards, rooftops, abandoned buildings and walkways, all locations normally unseen, inaccessible or unused by the public.

Swinging London is amidst Design Festival 2010 and with it comes the Victoria & Albert Museum Illustration Awards. Held annually to highlight the best literary illustrations published in the UK the previous year, my favorite, the Editorial Illustration Award, celebrates the top newspaper, magazine and comic renderings.

London Design 2010 is a happening now, and the town is chock full of design related installations. One of the official London Design Festival commissions is adding texture, color and a bit of drama to the grand marble staircase at the Architecture Galleries.

The “Build Your Own World” 01SJ Biennial takes over downtown San Jose for the third time on Sept. 16-19. Part art festival, part geek happening the Art & Tech Biennial focuses on creating a better world through the marriage of art and technology. The event features more than 100 nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists, engineers, designers, data miners and architects from 21 countries, augmented by exhibits by numerous Bay Area museums, galleries, cultural centers and corporations.

The Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology and the Design & Emotion Society are teaming up once again for the 7th International Conference on Design & Emotion. Held in Chicago, October 4-7, the International Conference on Design & Emotion is a forum held every other year where practitioners, researchers and industry leaders meet and exchange knowledge and insights concerning the cross-disciplinary field of design and emotion.

Design is Dead. Long live Design.
In response to what some are calling “25 years of cultural deep freeze”, the Anti-Design Festival in London will attempt to unlock creative fires and ideas, exploring spaces hitherto deemed out-of-bounds by a purely commercial criteria.
