Tomorrow, the American Cancer Society (ACS) will sponsor their 35th annual Great American Smokeout. The observance is an effort to encourage smokers to quit for 24 hours. After profiling vintage cigarette ads in a recent DesignCrave feature, we got to thinking about how and what has changed in the past 35 years and what ever happened to those ubiquitous cigarette vending machines of yesteryear.

This year’s DesignerCon will offer a one day treat for Star Wars geeks in the form of Spoonful of Star Wars. Featuring over 100 original paintings by artist Bwana Spoons these reimagined portraits of vintage Star Wars action figures are done in the artist’s signature style. Spoons was commissioned to reinterpret each vintage Kenner Star Wars action figure from the original line 1977-1985 in what the artist calls, “an awesome dream project.”

(Sigh)… Installation art. Part of artist Ai Weiwei’s Unilever Series, Sunflower Seeds fills a room about a 1/3 of an acre in size and was meant to be an interactive installation. The 100 million porcelain seeds hand painted by 1,600 people from the small Chinese city of Jingdezhen were meant to be a tactile experience scooped up, walked over or rested upon. Except now you can’t as it turns out the porcelain dust from your participation is toxic.
