If these walls could talk we guess they’d say “Draw on me” or something to that effect. This week at SXSW, eight street artists from around the world will compete over three days and two nights in a series of Secret Walls live art battles. The battles work like this: Two, 8-by-8-foot (or one 8-by-16-foot) canvases are setup for each round of the competition. Each artist is given an initial theme and 90 minutes to complete the rendering.

It’s not often a logo promotion can simultaneously tug at your heart strings while keeping your toes tapping, but Google certainly nailed it this week. The internet search giant is celebrating the 65th birthday of late Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury by featuring an elaborate Google Doodle created in his honor. The animated Doodle has the flashy front man performing the 1978 Queen hit “Don’t Stop Me Now” as a mini adventure with Mercury “leaping through the skies… riding a bicycle… having a good time” etc.

These aviator mirrors will lend a bit whimsy and paranoia to any room. Designed by Nigel Coates, the mirrors were originally part of the Baroccabilly collection made in Italy. Coates, a Royal College of Arts professor of Architecture is considered one the most innovative thinkers in British design.

Banksy didn’t win an Academy Award, wasn’t spotted at the show and didn’t even bother to vandalize the Kodiak Theater restrooms – disappointing stuff, we know. On a positive note, the hype surrounding his nomination brought attention to an often overlooked film genre, the documentary. While Exit Through the Gift Shop starts our list, other noteworthy art and design documentaries have been released in the past few years.

15 competitors from eight countries worked across five days, for a total of 65 hours, to create enormous works of art from a 20-ton block of snow at the 21st annual International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge, Colo this week.
