Replica Nina: Designed to Sail the Ocean Blue
By Diana Cook
Wow, there are so many interpretations of the significance of Columbus Day. For some it is the discovery of the Americas, others a way to honor their Italian heritage, and still another group a reason to decry Europeans’ actions against the indigenous populations of the Americas. No matter how you look at it, there was an ocean voyage and the folks over at the Columbus Foundation use it to celebrate vintage ship design, specifically the caravels in his fleet, the Nina and the Pinta.
Boasting the most historically accurate replica of a Columbus Ship ever built, the Columbus Foundation offers tours on replicas of both the Nina and the Pinta. Traveling up and down the Eastern Seaboard, the boats make stops along the coast to educate the public on vintage ship design.
So is it a day for big sales? to promote Catholicism? a day off from school? That day the post office/bank is closed and you don’t realize it until you arrive? However you choose to celebrate, there is no denying the multi-tasking abilities of this very flexible holiday.
