Copenhagen Concert Hall By Ateliers Jean Nouvel
By Jeffrey Hyatt
Located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Concert Hall is home to the Danish National Symphony Orchestra; a spectacular, large rectangular box draped in electric-blue translucent fabric; at night a montage of video images is projected onto the surface. Designed by Jean Nouvel for Danish public broadcaster DR, this awesome structure simply demands a night viewing. Seductive and imposing, the complex houses four halls with the main auditorium seating 1,800 people.
Jean Nouvel won the competition to design the approximately 592,000-square-foot concert hall in 2002, a fourth component of DR City, a 1.42-million-square-foot complex for Danish Radio’s offices, TV, radio, and orchestra productions. The Copenhagen Concert Hall opened last month with a delightful tribute to Hans Scharoun’s 1963 Berlin Philharmonie. [via architectural record]
