A New Rooftop For Hanover House
By Jeffrey Hyatt
Kraus Schoenberg Architects development of Hanover House in the Little Germany area of Bradford, UK involved the refurbishment a Victorian warehouse building. The residential roof extension was conceived as a folding plate and prefabricated in engineered timber. The character of the area is created by the uniformity of buildings, which date from the 19th century.
The duo of Tobias Kraus and Timm Schönberg utilized sandstone material and the ornamental treatment of the facades to unify the blocks – although the buildings in Little Germany vary in size and form. Accordingly, the roofscape is one of great diversity. This informs the design of the new roof, which reinterprets the surrounding forms, sizes and orientations. [via existingvisual]
