Long Island Home Combines Traditional Lines, Unusual Elements
By Joe Wertz
Tasked with accommodating both a growing family and its quirky art collection, architects at Bates Masi designed a playful home that toys with perception. From a distance, the gabled roofline and massive chimney are traditional Long Island architecture, but a closer examination reveals that the Qual Hill home’s shingles are actually oak surveyors stakes and the chimney is formed from thin concrete sheets. The surprises continue inside. A wall that appears built from translucent stone is actually seashells sandwiched between panes of glass, while the shimmering texture of the fireplace is created by a cladding of polished dog tags.
