Designed for an extended urban family, House TTN accommodates collective functions while allowing independent living coveted by the individual members. The Tokyo residence was designed by Japanese architect Teruo Miyahara, who made sure each independent family unit — two parents and their daughters’ families — had their own space nested within, complete with their own kitchen and bathroom. A common deck unites the separate spaces and uses glass and Japanese blinds to create adjustable privacy. The parents occupy the ground floor, while the second story is split into an east and west wing for each daughter’s family. The entire building is flexible and somewhat modular. Construction was laid on two separate foundations that can allow the home to be split in half, creating two truly separate homes if the family later wishes to do so. [via plusmood]
