While the Animal Wall might at first glance appear visually invasive, there is a method to designer Gitta Gschwendtner’s madness. Built in the U.K.’s Cardiff Bay, the wall features 1,000 individual homes for birds and bats, providing a vast sanctuary for winged creatures of all stripes. The 50-meter Animal Wall also serves to separate a housing development and river front. Bats, starlings, sparrows and blue and grey tits are expected to be among the inhabitants come nesting time next spring. Developers of the area commissioned the wall, which took two and half years to construct, due to concern about the destruction of natural habitats. It’s certainly refreshing to see development creating a space for wildlife rather than simply pushing it out. [via Inhabitat]
