Brick Weave Redo Brings New Use To Old Building
By Joe Wertz
Originally built wood-framed stable before the turn of the century, the shell of this Chicago remodel was erratically expanded over the years, hosting brick additions and haphazard add-ons that included a lean-to and postwar siding. Ad exec David Hernandez bought the building in 1999, excited by the wide lot, its central location and a high-ceiling space that would yield room for wrenching on cars and motorcycles. The first phase of the Brick Weave House renovation was motivated by Hernandez’ now wife, ad exec Tereasa Surratt, and together the pair reworked the back of the building with Nate Berkus, Oprah’s interior designer. The couple commissioned Jeanne Gang to rehab the rest of the home with bright paint, new windows, fixtures and furniture and structural details that transform the space into a home that works as a stylish urban retreat and garage for hobbies and projects.
