Organization of Islamic Conference HQ by Willy Muller Architects

In 2006, Europe-based Willy Muller Architects submitted a very bold design for the Organization of Islamic Conference Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Sadly, although their proposal entered the second phase of selection it was not chosen. However, their dome-like/cupola is a stunning structure that deserves mention as a visible and powerful icon from the vast and rich culture and history of Islamic architecture. Beyond its aesthetics, the magnificent 278 ft tall plaza has 2 underground levels and 14 more above, is made from steel, glass and concrete and features five pillars where every limb connects together representing the union of Muslim nations under one common “roof”. It’s unfortunate that Willy Muller Architects wasn’t selected, this design certainly needs to come to life. [via Yatzer]
