Sears Tower Name Change – The famed Sears Tower in Chicago will officially be re-christened as the Willis Tower today by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.  Upon it’s completion in 1973, the Sears Tower became the world’s tallest building until 1998, when the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lampur claimed a higher reach.  Today, the Sears Tower will become the Willis Tower, having been purchased by Willis Group Holdings, a London-based insurance broker.  The name change will be met with plenty of emotion by Chicagoans and fans of architecture throughout the world.  For over two decades, the Willis Tower was the world’s tallest, and remains the tallest building in the United States today.  In other Sears/Willis Tower news, check out the recently revealed glass balconies on the Willis Tower’s 103rd floor.  [via chicagotribune, image r.duran]
