Hello Farewell: Slovenian Church By OFIS Architects
By Joe Wertz
Built on a site carved from a sloping hill near a graveyard in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Farewell Chapel is made from polished concrete, glass and larch wood and was designed by architects at OFIS. The sweeping curve of the Catholic church’s roof creates an external porch space, while a curving interior wall houses storage, restrooms and a kitchenette. The main church hall expands towards a plateau and opens for outdoor gatherings and a large cross-shaped oculus lights with the sun and sky, giving churchgoers a dramatic symbolic centerpiece as they peer at the heavens.
