A tasty form of functional creativity, the Sharecropper public art project is seeding New York City with visual proof of the growing green movement in dense urban centers. Created by Leah Gauthier, project participants have planted heirloom, endangered and rare vegetables and herbs on 17 parcels of donated land spread through each of NYC’s five Burroughs. A portion of the micro-farming harvest will be donated to local soup kitchens and the gardens will serve as rallying points for urban farming lectures, discussions and workshops and stage public art and cooking events.
