The Ball-Nogues studio is an integrated design and fabrication studio founded by Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues. The pair are wild experimenters who build interactive, large-scale environments that become public spectacles, engaging the senses and encouraging social interaction.

Maximilians-Schell is a temporary, apartment-sized installation set up in the courtyard of Los Angeles’ Materials & Applications. The spiraling, fractal-like patterns of the tinted Mylar converge, warping the space like an urban wormhole.

Unseen Current is comprised of 3,000 strings threaded between walls of Chicago’s Extension Gallery. The space between the 10 miles of string blurs like a cloud and undulates like a fog. The piece was inspired by Los Angeles’ smoggy outline.

Rip-Curl-Canyon was commissioned by the Rice University Gallery in 2006. Laminated cardboard creates topographic curves and forms for visitors to climb, slide and play on.

Liquid Sky was an outdoor installation arranged by MoMa and the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. Ball and Nogues canopied a public space in New York with translucent fabric, which added shadows of color to the cold Queens concrete. [via fabrikproject]
