10 iPhone Design Concepts that Never Were
By Jared Newman
iPhone Design Concepts - According to a recent leak, there’s a new iPhone on its way for July 17th. As that date approaches, the frenzied speculation of the new design will reach a fever pitch. What will this new design bring for Apple fans throughout the world? DesignCrave has compiled a list of 10 iPhone design concepts that have surfaced over the years, some beautiful, others… not so beautiful. Will any of these inspire the new iPhone? Take a look below and decide for yourself.
The Clear iPhone

Nevermind that this design would require either a cloaking wrap or clever use of a rear camera, the covet value of this concept is off the charts. And somehow this iPhone will pack a 64 GB hard drive. I like the tag line too, as if Apple will someday abandon its subtle arrogance in favor of hubris. [via Concept Phones]
iPhone Pro

The Palm Pre is coming, so maybe Apple would have been wise to stash a keyboard under its touch screen to compete. This is actually a modification of Mat Brady’s iPhone Elite, adding gaming controls on both sides. The layering of the keys is a nice touch. [via Gizmodo]
iPhone Air

Apple’s products may play well together, but they tend to mark their own territory. That’s why the iPhone Air will never happen. Two screens would’ve been nice, though. Also, the sharp edges might make for a great defensive tool if anyone tries to steal your phone. [via iLounge]
“The new” Blue iPhone

This would be a complete change of course. Instead of having its own identity, the blue iPhone borrows a Mac desktop background, the curves of an old iMac and a wheel-based menu that sort of resembles an iPod. And is that a rotary dialer? It’s ugly, but you can’t look away. [via Concept Phones]
The iPhone Wrap

Don’t laugh. Kyocera imagines that flexible OLED screens will be possible some day, and Apple could very well stay ahead of that curve. No longer is pocketing the phone necessary when the girlfriend doesn’t bring her purse. A simple wrap an snap, and this phone’s ready to go. [via iLounge]
The Ultrathin iPhone

Back to reality. This phone impresses with its glass and titanium construction, in a form factor that’s thin like a standard iPod. It’s also got a removable battery, so no more sending it in for replacement. Macbook users will also love the industrial gray casing. Finally, everything matches. [via GearCrave]
The iPhone for the Visually Impaired

Touch screen smartphones are great, except blind people can’t really use them. The Tactile Silicon Case for the iPhone isn’t a phone itself, but a skin that completely changes the handset. Using a special app, the skin keeps all of the iPhone’s functionality, but with bas-relief buttons and special functions like text-to-speech. Those who can see will be envious. [via Yanko Design]
iPhone Graphite

This one’s all about the materials. Apparently “marketed for elegance,” the iPhone Graphite would presumably be made of the same material found in golf clubs. That’ll make it lighter than ever, so you won’t even know the phone is gone when it falls out of your pocket. [via Burning Ninja]
iPhone 2.0

Obviously, the second generation iPhone has come and gone, and it didn’t look like this. Not that we’d complain if it did. Designed by a Isamu Sanada when he learned the iPhone was coming to his home country of Japan, this rendering has curved edges that resemble an iPod Mini while retaining a professional overall look. The sharp edges might’ve made for some discomfort in pockets, though. [via AppleStyle]
The iPhone Shoe

Fans were bound to go off the deep end with their concepts, and in fact more than 100 people did so when prompted by Gizmodo. A challenge to readers resulted in the wildest of iPhone fantasies, from a fruit phone to a smartphone embedded in the eye (get it?), but we’re sticking with the iShoe as our personal favorite. Why? Because it’s somehow not too far from reality. [via Gizmodo]
Thanks for reading, DesignCravers, Diggers, Stumblers and otherwise. What is your favorite iPhone design from the list above? Would you like to see any of these design concepts used in the next generation iPhone? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear your opinions.
