Modern Home Helps Owners Age With Ease

A home built to satisfy both the specific functional requirements of its residents and the strict design restraints of its architect, this contemporary home is sleek, spacious and blends in to the Rhenen, Netherlands, landscape. At the heart of the home is a lengthy, rectangular pool for the aging-but-active owners. Glass surrounds the indoor pool, mirroring reflections and controlling moisture and a heat-pump works with the pool’s temperature system to help regulate climate throughout the house. Architect Paul de Ruiter designed the home on a single level without any thresholds. Nearly everything in the home — doors, windows, lights, etc. — can be controlled electronically, but the wires and mechanics of the house-wide system are hidden in the basement, walls and ceilings to keep with the home’s clean aesthetic.
