Arena-sized Croatian Prefab Stadium Project
By Joe Wertz
Surrounded by 86 curved columns, Croatia’s Arena Zagreb is a striking stadium shell that serves high-profile sports, cultural and entertainment events. Built to host the 2009 World Men’s Handball Championships, the stadium opened in December, 2008 — a year-long construction project designed and managed by Croatian architectural and engineering firm UPI-2M. The 120-foot reinforced concrete columns were pre-stressed and prefabricated offsite and were designed to hold a suspended steel roof structure and a translucent Lexan exterior façade.
