Durham, N.C., firm Freelon Group, which typically lends its talents to public structures went decidedly private when designing a residence for company architect, Michael A. Rantilla. The concrete, glass and marble home was built around several Raleigh restrictions, including zoning setback rules, a stream buffer and a formidable slope. The resulting three-story home is rustic and contemporary and is nearly transparent to the trees that surround it thanks to large glass walls and natural material highlights in Brazilian Ipe and bamboo.
